Prophecy Revealed: Visions from the Divine
Who can see God – and how?
Why was the prophet of former times called a “seer” (1 Samuel 9:9)?
From Abraham to Isaiah, from Job to Ezekiel and Daniel, many Biblical characters claimed to “see” or “envision” the divine.
- Yet how can one discern a true from a false vision?
- And does God himself send a “lying spirit” to the lips of false prophets (1 Kings 22:22-23)?
- Are visions essential or even important? Why are they so often strange and shocking?
You are invited to dive with us into an investigation of profound and transformative visionary experiences recorded in ancient Jewish literature.
In addition to the Hebrew Bible, we will explore texts from later Second Temple Judaism (including Enochic literature and the “New Testament”) to understand more about the hiddenness and revelation of the Creator-God of Israel.
The discussion will be hosted by Dr. Yeshaya Gruber and will feature Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg, Prof. Pinchas Shir, and Dr. Carlos Santos-Carretero of the Israel Bible Center.
